UNNAT MAHARASHTRA ABHIYAN
About
Unnat Maharashtra Abhiyan (UMA) is a project of the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education. Its mandate is to build an independent and public knowledge infrastructure for the state of Maharashtra which will bring socio-economic and cultural development for its people, especially those in the bottom 80% of the socio-economic strata. UMA aligns closely with the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) mechanism of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, whose vision is to bring about “transformational change in rural development processes by leveraging knowledge institutions to help build the architecture of an Inclusive India”
Vision & Mission
(i) Enable demand-driven research: enable citizens, elected representatives, and state agencies to access institutions of learning (i.e., institutions of higher education, IHEs) for topical research such as in feasibility studies, evaluation, assessment, or innovative design and
(ii) Align with development: to align curricula and research in higher education towards better development outcomes and to train students for a future role as development professionals and researchers.
Objectives for Institutions
The objectives of the project are
(i) to align the research, curricula and training of professional colleges with problems of development.
(ii) To create avenues for students, guided by staff and faculty, for gainful interactions between IHEs and state agencies.
(iii) To enable IHEs into becoming a regional knowledge resource which is accessible to the public at large.
(iv) To promote a scientific temper

1.Evaluation of Cement Nala Bund Constructed under Jalyukta Shivar Abhiyan 2017-18 in Aurangabad District.
1. Technology Transfer for Ashramshalas
Objective: Tribal Development Department intends to implement technological solutions for the focus areas identified by the department in Ashramshalas after vetting, assessment and filed testing them under pilot conditions in few selected places in partnership with CTARA by levering UMA.
Scope of the Project: The scope will be restricted to Ashramshalas. Three Ashramshalas in different geographical areas have been selected in consultation with Tribal Development areas as follows:
i. Government Ashram School, Sakhare, District: Palghar
ii. Government Ashram School, Shirsole District: Dhule
iii. Government Ashram School Tembursoda District: Amravati
Focus Areas are as follows:
i. Drinking Water Availability
ii. Sanitation Facilities
iii. Electricity
iv. Green Technology
v. Food Storage
vi. Security
vii. Snake Repellent
viii. Septic Tank
ix. Solid Waste
x. Biogas
xi. Menstrual Health

2. Tribal Skill Development of Tribal Youth:
Objective: TRTI has kept objective for overall management of the program to identify, mobilize, train, certify tribal youth by leveraging the network of UMA institutions spread across Maharashtra for implementation.
Scope of the Project: The scope will be restricted to tribal areas of Maharashtra and it is divided into two phases discovery phase and execution phase.
i. Discovery Phase: Compilation of innovations in different departments of IIT Bombay, UMA Institutions and a few other institutions, their assessment of potential and relevance to demand side fulfilment of needs is undertaken.
ii. Execution Phase: During execution phase the program in which around 500-600 youths will be trained across Maharashtra. Per mandate given by TRTI, about 50% of the youths needs to be trained for innovation based self employment and remaining 50% will be demand driven wage earning based skills

1. UMA orientation workshop organized in association with CTARA IITB for 12 empanelled institutes under Unnat Maharashtra Abhiyan on 19th August, 2017
2. Jalyukta Shivar (JYS) assessment at Jambhala, Tal: Gangapur, Dist. Aurangabad from 8th Sept, 2017 to Dec. 2017.
3. Attended training program on “ Improving the performance of rural water supply and sanitation sector in Maharashtra” organized by CTARA, IIT, Bombay, UNICEF, Mumbai and IRAP, Hyderabad at RIT, Sakharale, Islampur on 24th – 26th , September, 2017
2) Collected DPR from ZP office, Aurangabad for study purpose from 14th – 22nd , November, 2017 Visit to Nandrabad (Tal: Khultabad, Dist: Aurangabad) village for inspection, evaluation and data collection of rural water supply scheme on 24th & 25th , November, 2017
3) Signed MOU with DSAO, Aurangabad for Third Party Audit of the Cement Nala Band constructed Jalyukta Shivar Abhiyan 2017-18 in Aurangabad District on 27th February 2019.

3. Visit to Daulatabad (Tal. & Dist: Aurangabad) village for inspection, evaluation and data collection of rural water supply scheme on 28th & 29th, November, 2017.
4. Visit to Nandrabad and Daulatabad villages for inspection to household water supply connections and policy analysis with Dr. Harish Kumara (IRAP, Hyderabad) on 13th & 14th , December, 2017.
5. Desk work with Mr. Praneeth Kadambala (CTARA, IIT, Bombay) for understanding DPR and analysis of collected field data on 21st December, 2017. Team members are as follows:
6. Visit to Daulatabad with Mr. Praneeth Kadambala (CTARA, IIT, Bombay) for tracking whole RWS Scheme from source to distribution network by GPS and collecting necessary information regarding VWSS committee and policy analysis from GP officials on 22 Dec. 2017
7. Mr. Praneeth Kadambala (CTARA, IIT, Bombay) given hands on training on Jal-Tantra software, design of RWS scheme using excel, Plotting scheme on Google-Earth and preparation of sample report for Daulatabad scheme on 23rd December, 2017, Team members are as follows:
8. Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between MIT and Center for Applied Research & People’s Engagement (CARPE). Activity started in Dec, 2017.
9. Preparation of report & presentation of both the schemes (Daulatabad & Nandrabad) & submitted to UMA officials on 1st -13th , January, 2018
10. Attended field work follow-up workshop on “Improving the performance of rural water supply & sanitation sector in Maharashtra” at Amrutvahini College of Engineering, Sangamaner organized by CTARA, IIT, Bombay, UNICEF, Mumbai and IRAP, Hyderabad on 15th – 16th , January, 2018.
11. Working on UMA proposal with TRTI (Tribal Research and Training Institute). The proposal involves imparting skills and entrepreneurship training to tribal youth by leveraging the UMA mechanism. The initial pilot will be implemented at a few sites and then scaled up depending on the experience.
12. Attended a Jalyukta Shivar Abhiyan Assessment workshop organized by Prof. Ram Meghe Institute of Technology & Research in association with TDSC of CTARA-IIT Bombay under the Unnat Maharashtra Abhiyan (UMA) Initiative on 4th and 5th February 2018 at Prof. Ram Meghe Institute of Technology & Research, Amaravati, Maharashtra
13. Organized a Jalyukta Shivar Abhiyan Assessment follow-up workshop in association with TDSC of CTARA-IIT Bombay under the Unnat Maharashtra Abhiyan (UMA) Initiative on 5th and 6th July 2018 at Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
14. In Association with Center for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas (CTARA), IIT Bombay Jalyukta Shivar Abhiyan Assessment work and survey for drinking Water Situation for three villages (Ambegaon, Takaliwadi, and Pachpirwadi) was carried out in Gangapur Taluka. The work was completed in 4 months.
15. Organized a One day NGO workshop in association with The Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG). IIT Bombay under the Unnat Maharashtra Abhiyan (UMA) Initiative on 25th September 2018 at Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The objective of this workshop was to identify suitable problems from rural areas of Marathwada region.
16. Proposal to Hon’ble Chairman, Jalyukta Shivar Abhiyan, Aurangabad District for Cement Nala Bund (CNB) Concurrent audit work under Jalyukta Shivar Abhiyan for Year 2018-19 is in progress.
